Last Saturday, Palm Tree Music Festival celebrated its fifth anniversary in The Hamptons with a line-up boasting fest co-founder Kygo, Fisher, Mau P, Blond:ish, Coco & Breezy and more. Right before their electric set (and before hangs in the Palm Club VIP) we caught up with Coco & Breezy — the Minnesota born twins, eyewear cofounders, DJs, producers, style icons (takes a breath) and trailblazers who have been creating music from their souls for nearly a decade — tapping into their Afro-Latina heritage to help audiences break free with the help of vibrant house music.

“Before all of our sets, we do a meditation where we talk to our ancestor,” the duo told PAPER backstage. “It’s pretty much for them to allow us to be vessels to give the crowd exactly what they want. So a lot of the feedback that we’ve gotten, when people leave our set, we hope that they feel love, we hope that they feel like they’re around community.” Spoiler: we did.

Below, check out our chat with Coco & Breezy, as we chat about their latest single “Home,” their plans for the summer, and what fans could expect from them next.

""

You recently released a new single, what can you tell us about it?

Coco: We actually just released a song a few weeks ago called “Home,” and this song is my favorite song we’ve ever released!

Breezy: It’s so vibey. It’s like the perfect summertime song. It’s so intentional, but it has the groove that makes you just want to tear it up on the dance floor.

Coco: And it has beautiful vocals from an amazing singer-songwriter named Ayelle.

You’ve been making music together for so long now. What are some of the highlights and challenges from the last 8 years.

Coco: We’ve been in the industry for almost a decade. We started our eyewear company [Coco and Breezy] when we were 19 years old.

Breezy: I think the biggest highlight is remembering teenage Coco & Breezy having a dream in Minnesota. And now, the biggest celebration is that we’re seeing the fruits of our labor. We’re seeing all of the things we manifested for Coco & Breezy coming to life.

Coco: And the biggest challenge, probably, is going through the ups and downs and ebs and flows. We’ve gone through so many ups and so many downs. But that’s the fun part about life is that you have to go through those down experiences to see how you can continue to get better.

We’re about to watch you take the stage. What can we expect from your set?

Coco: Fans can expect an amazing set from us at Palm Tree Festival. We actually did some prep in our car on the way here and in our trailer. We’re going to play some unreleased songs and it’s going to be very housey, soulful, dancey.

Breezy: And some percussion elements. I think, at a Coco & Breezy set, in general, there’s three things you’re always going to feel: good, intentionality, and things that actually make you groove. Not just fist bump, but really dance … how house music started.

""

You have incredible personal style. How would you describe it in three words?

Breezy: If I could describe our style in three words, I would say bad-ass …

Coco: Punk, rockstars.

As we know, last summer was Brat summer. What’s this summer’s theme for Coco & Breezy?

Coco: This summer for me, is free your soul summer. Free your soul means living in your free self, doing what you feel good doing, and making sure that you’re being intentional with every move and everything that you do.

Breezy: The same way you use intentionality with your outfits, putting it into your soul and your mind and your body and actually taking care of yourself. I think that the fashion industry is so like, “What’s the new trend?” But the new trend should be taking care of your mind, body and soul. The outfit comes later.

How do you hope fans feel when they walk away from a Coco & Breezy set?

Breezy: Before all of our sets, we do a meditation where we talk to our ancestors. It’s pretty much for them to allow us to be vessels to give the crowd exactly what they want. So a lot of the feedback that we’ve gotten, when people leave our set, we hope that they feel love, we hope that they feel like they’re around community.

Coco: And we also hope that they feel good, high vibrational music.

Breezy: Also, they’re tired because they’re dancing the whole time. Let’s not forget that part.

What are you both most excited to share next?

Coco: I am most excited to share our new music with our fans. This year, we have the most music releases we’ve ever had in a year and all the songs are so good.
