Bill Maher has spoken out against Jimmy Kimmel’s wife, Molly McNearney, after she admitted to cutting off relatives who voted for Trump in November’s election. The Real Time host argued that ‘ultimatums don’t make people rethink their politics,’ but make them ‘rethink you.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

The comments follow McNearney’s appearance on the We Can Do Hard Things podcast earlier this month, where she spoke about her family members being ‘deliberately misinformed every day.’ McNearney, who is also a co–head writer and executive producer of her husband’s late-night talk show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, added that his recent public clashes with the president have made family life more complicated. McNearney said on the podcast: ‘To me, them voting for Trump is them not voting for my husband and me and our family.’ Kimmel, along with a string of other celebrities, was previously outspoken about his support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the presidential race last year. When it was looking like Trump may come out victorious, he told MSNBC host Joe Scarborough: ‘I was telling my wife, I don’t feel like I’m mentally prepared for the possibility of a loss. I’m not ready. I have to get there where I’m ready for either scenario.’ (Picture: Getty Images)

He continued: ‘You’re going to have to be up the next morning talking about what happened or what didn’t happen and what message do you want to send to people who watch the show. Most of my shows aren’t important. That one seems a little bit more important than others because I do have a lot of people kind of asking me what I think and going along with what I think, and it’s a big responsibility.’ (Picture: AP)

Acknowledging on the podcast that some of her familial relationships have broken down since, McNearney revealed that before the election she drew up a list of ’10 reasons’ why they shouldn’t support Trump. ‘I’ve sent many emails to family saying, “I’m begging you. Here’s the 10 reasons not to vote for this guy. Please don’t,”‘ she said. (Picture: Yuri Gripas/UPI/Shutterstock)

McNearney added that she was ignored by 90% of her family members and received ‘truly insane responses’ from some. ‘It’s definitely caused a strain,’ she admitted. As for Maher, he said: ‘She [McNearney] says she’s lost relationships with relatives because she wrote them an email before the election with 10 reasons why they shouldn’t vote for Trump, and some still didn’t obey.’ (Picture: JC Olivera/Variety via Getty Images)

While Maher said that while he could think of ‘100 reasons’ not to vote for Trump, he would never use opposing political views as an ultimatum. He continued: ‘Ultimatums don’t make people rethink their politics. They make them rethink you.’ (Picture: Noam Galai/Getty Images)

Speaking on the podcast, McNearney admitted that the aftermath has led to her becoming closer with some of her relatives who are more aligned with her and her family’s views. She said: ‘I’ve definitely pulled in closer with the family that I feel more aligned with. Part of me goes, “Don’t let politics get in the way.” But to me, this isn’t politics. It’s truly values. And we’re not aligned anymore.’ (Picture: Randy Holmes/Disney via Getty Images)

This comes after Jimmy Kimmel took another swipe at Donald Trump on his late-night show. The 58-year-old talk show host – whose programme was briefly pulled off air in September following comments made about Charlie Kirk, the American right-wing political activist who was assassinated that month – opened his show last week with a message for ‘the angry orange’ after the US leader called for him to be fired once again. During his monologue, Kimmel said: ‘Mr. President, I admire your tenacity. If you’re watching tonight, which I presume you are, how about this: I’ll go when you go, OK? We’ll be a team. Let’s ride off into the sunset together like Butch Cassidy and the Suntan Kid. And until then, if I may borrow a phrase from you: Quiet, piggy.’ (Picture: Jimmy Kimmel Live)

For those unaware, Kimmel was referencing recent footage which showed Trump call a journalist ‘piggy,’ after she asked the President about the Epstein files. The reporter said: ‘If there’s nothing incriminating in the files, then why,’ before Trump cut her off and hurled out the insult.
