Rapper and Travis Barker collaborator Poorstacy dies aged 26

Rapper and frequent Travis Barker collaborator Poorstacy has died at the age of 26.

The star, full name Carlito Junior Milfort, is understood to have been staying at a hotel in Boca Raton, Florida, when police were called on Saturday.

Poorstacy was said to have been taken to a nearby hospital by authorities.

The Boca Raton Police Department confirmed to Billboard that the rapper died after an ‘incident’. His cause of death has not been confirmed.

Poorstacy hailed from nearby Palm Beach. The county’s medical examiner subsequently confirmed the musician’s death to Page Six.

The rapper-singer had worked closely with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker on several emo-rap tracks.

Barker has already paid tribute to the rapper, sharing a clip of the pair recording a music video together and another of them on stage on his Instagram Story.

In the caption, he wrote alongside a broken heart emoji: ‘Rest in peace, you’ll never be forgotten.’

Poorstacy collaborated with Barker on the tracks Choose Life, Nothing Left, and Hills Have Eyes.

Of their three songs together, their 2020 track Choose Life, off his album The Breakfast Club, saw the most success.

Poorstacy released two studio albums, two EPs, and was featured on the Grammy Award-nominated Bill & Ted Face the Music soundtrack.

The rapper dropped his most recent song Nothing Belongs to You in July.

Poorstacy, whose name was inspired by skater Stacy Peralta, adopted the stage name after trying a few different aliases to produce music under.

‘Stacy Peralta himself was not shown a lot of attention at the start, but he ended up being one of the biggest legends in skateboarding in the end,’ he said.

‘I always loved the idea of that, of doing your own thing and having it pay off.’

Over his career, Poorstacy produced music that blended genres of hip hop, punk rock and heavy metal. He currently holds nearly 500,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.

Taking to his Instagram comments after news of his death, several fans noted that his distinctively darkly themed music had been a touchstone through hard times.

He cited the likes of Billy Idol, XXXTentacion, The Kooks, The Strokes, My Chemical Romance and Slipknot as influences, as well as the films V for Vendetta, Trainspotting, and Halloween.

The rapper also collaborated with Bring Me the Horizon frontman Oli Sykes as well as singer and rapper Iann Dior, who has shared a slideshow of photos of the two with his 1million Instagram followers.

In the caption, Dior paid tribute to Poorstacy, writing: ‘I don’t even know where to start….you were the first brother I made when I came out to LA. We went and did everything together.

‘You always stuck up for me when nobody else would even if it didn’t call for it. We fought like brothers all the time but at the end of the day we have been through the roughest times together and the happiest moments, memories I’ll cherish forever.

‘I’m so sorry lito it should’ve have ended this way…. You didn’t deserve this. Rest in paradise my brother.’

Fans have taken to the comments section of both Dior and Poorstacy’s Instagram accounts to pay tribute.

Tyler wrote: ‘Man those Soundcloud days in 2018-19! You, Stacy, Bernard Pradababy really saved my life back in 6th grade. RIP Stacy.’

‘STILL remember when you and him both performed the still to this day unreleased song TONIGHT at the Roxy in LA during your first tour in 2019!!,’ wrote Michael. ‘Man oh man, how that song got me through sometimes… RIP POORSTACY.’
